Tell us about yourself:
Hi, I'm Bubele. I like vanilla milkshakes. I watch too many rom-coms and sometimes I make music… and by 'sometimes' I mean: basically every waking moment I’m not watching a rom-com or drinking a milkshake.
Name of your most recent release:
Why are you a songwriter?
Because it's the only place I can sub-verbally process the world around me. Through music I feel heard. If I can somehow help someone do the same then I think the world is a better place for it.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Slowly building the incredible network of collaborators around me. I'm nothing without the incredibly talented people around me.
Share the most interesting writing experience you ever had:
Every session is wildly different from the ones before - the most ridiculous recent event was showing up to the studio to cut vocals, with fellow Songathon alum Khaya Cohen, and there was a complete stranger in the studio who had posed as the engineer for the session and was taking elicit substances on the table. It took us about 20min to talk him down and convince him to leave without escalating the situation. We even had to exchange Instagrams with the stranger just to calm the situation. It was both hilarious and scary.
What makes you unique as a songwriter?
Being born and raised in South Africa really sets the base of my musical DNA. Every proceeding of all types is always bookended with a song. There is a song for every occasion. Music is the medium that connects the African body to the African soul. - I think my upbringing has taught me to see and find that song.
If you could write with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
Max Martin because we all want to know what magic feels like.
